The Different Types of Greenhouse Pots

Biodegradable container gardening can be a fun way to recycle food waste into a nutritious, attractive plant. Be sure that you are growing plants that can tolerate being planted in a container. Many container plants grow quite well in small pot sizes. However, if you have planted a bigger plant in a smaller pot, it may not take as much of the resourceful gardener’s time to remove the plant once it has established itself.

Most greenhouse pots come in standard sizes, but if you are growing an extremely popular plant that is native to your area, you may be able to find special order containers. Round pots are by far the most common type of container gardening plant, used for just about any type of gardening need. However, it’s possible to find square or hexagonal pots as well. Some species like tulips, daffodils, nettles, blue star or hydrangeas do best in round pots.

If you are planting perennials in your greenhouse pots, they will need less water than plants planted in a garden. Plant them six to eight inches deep and use low-rate fertilizer. Most perennials will do fine in a low-maintenance fertilizer. Most greenhouse pots come with an adjustable air pump, making it easy to raise the plants at the right time each year.

For container herbs such as dill, coriander, mint and thyme, you will need to place them in a sunny location. They are very forgiving when it comes to watering. It’s recommended that you fill the pots with a light, dry soil mix. If you are going to use topsoil, place it in the bottom of the container. These plants thrive better when they have lots of sunlight location. If you live in an area with harsh, windy weather, you can plant these plants someplace with a little bit of shade.

Pots planted in full sun will need to be watered often, especially during the hottest part of the day. They should never be left sitting in excess water. Make sure the soil is well-drained before planting them in plastic greenhouse pots. Watering them frequently throughout the day is best. You can leave them sitting in the water, but try not to let any run off, because it will wash the roots.

When choosing which type of greenhouse pot you want to purchase, pick one that is made of material that will keep its shape in the sun. Plastic pots with colorful lids are ideal for this purpose. If you want to plant taller plants or shrubs in your greenhouse, consider using a rectangular greenhouse pot, with two side panels on each side of the lid. This will allow air circulation and will keep the plants higher up and out of the sun.

Plastic greenhouse pots do not need to be perfectly round, but they should be wider than tall. These pots do better in the shade and will not be as likely to rot as when they were planted in the ground. A pot with a mesh bottom is perfect for growing a variety of plants, including clematis and other annuals. The only problem with using plastic is that it can be difficult to keep clean. A good rule of thumb is to never use the pot to plant anything that could chip or break if it falls over.

Growing in greenhouse pots is a fun activity, and it allows you more control over what plants you plant. However, if you plan on planting anything that can easily kill or be killed by the elements, such as woody plants, it may be a good idea to stick to the type of container you use for your permanent greenhouse. If you are only growing a few plants that don’t mind living in a protected environment, a plastic pot will work fine.
